OCJ Kids (Opportunity Community and Justice for Kids) is a youth services center that empowers the lives of at-risk and foster children and youth. Changing Perceptions of Children in Foster Care
Every month, nearly 800 children are entering the foster system. They enter without diapers, clothes, food, and other essentials every child deserves. They age out of foster care with a black trash bag, no driver’s license, no job, no place to live, and no support structures. With the help of the community, OCJ Kids is working to disrupt the public perception and understanding of these youths, as well as helping give them the start in life they deserve.
OCJ Kids was founded in 1992 by Gary and Tammy Webb, whose united passion was to reach out to the growing population of unsupervised youth aged 12-18, kids who were gathering after school with nothing productive to occupy their time and who were being tempted by negative influences, including gangs, drugs, and violent behavior. By forming an alliance with the business and faith communities to provide services, resources and caring adults to address the needs of the most vulnerable in our society, OCJ Kids has touched the lives of thousands of children and families.
The impact OCJ Kids has on the community is more than just short-term. “It really is about the long-term impacts these services and resources provide for kids in the foster care system,” says Webb. “Studies show that foster youth that have a caring adult in their life have an 80% higher chance of succeeding. Tracking measures for the InterAct trauma project has seen incredible growth in each child’s life and allows them to function on a level playing field. We want to see these numbers continue to grow and watch these children achieve their potential.”
